The Screaming Tribesmen was a band formed in Brisbane by Mick Medew, John Hartley & Murray Shepherd. They took the Australian independent scene by storm with a series of singles on Citadel Records. Their earliest hit "Igloo" was penned by Medew and Died Pretty frontman Ron Peno.

After relocation to Sydney, and a number of line-up changes the band settled on its most successful lineup of Medew, ex-Radio Birdman & The Hitmen guitarist Chris Masuak, bass player Bob Wackley & drummer Warwick Fraser (ex-Feather & Hoi Polloi) who replaced Michael Charles after the recording of the "Date With A Vampyre" EP.

The "Vampyre" EP reigned at the top of the Australian independent charts for over 40 weeks, while the band toured constantly in support. The follow up "Top of the Town" EP released on the boutique Rattlesnake Records : six songs by a new lineup that reveals an ongoing transition towards more mainstream pop-rock. "You Better Run" is the most impressive track, and a fair precursor to the excellent "Bones + Flowers". The album launches the Tribesmen into a new international league, offering richly played rock-melody songwriting (by ex-Radio Birdman guitarist/pianist/producer Chris "Klondike" Masuak and singer/guitarist Mick Medew) that's got all the needed attributes for major stardom. Standouts: a new version of "Igloo," the wittily '60sish "Our Time at Last," the peppy Anglo-popping "Dream Away" and the Rockpiling "Living Vampire." The CD has two bonus tracks. Despite the album's appeal and high commercial prospects, nothing much came of "Bones + Flowers". Then the band issued the five-track , 12-inch EP "Take cover" (august 1989), which comprised all cover versions (Dictators , Lou Reed). The Tribesmen issued "Blood and lust" in March 1991 , this lp includes a couple of the band's heaviest ever songs like "High priestss" , "Something dangerous" & "Queen of the night time world". Survival also issued the Screaming Tribesmen compilation "High time- A collection" in december 1990. After three years of silence the Tribesmen issued their last album "Formaldehyde" in july 1993 . Mick Medew was the only member remaining from the beginning .

Bones + Flowers is the most appealing effort by Australian combo Screaming Tribesmen -- a melodic pop album that resembles a muscular Let's Active. "I've Got a Feeling" was distributed internationally and featured on MTV's 120 Minutes at the time, and the Tribesmen's appearance in the midst of the Church's breakthrough with "Starfish" seemed to presage an Australian Invasion that never came to pass. Screaming Tribesmen might have better reached the "alternative" audience if they hadn't looked like a heavy metal band; likewise, the band's name and album art didn't come close to matching the mood of their music. The Tribesmen didn't last long after the commercial disappointment of "Bones + Flowers", but the album remains a sturdy collection of recordings, with the catchy, jangly "Girl in My Dreams" and "Dream Away" as highlights. There's nothing tribal about the sound of these Aussies, and they don't scream either. Their music is full of pop-song harmonies, including "oohh" and "ahh" background singing, jangle chords and repeated refrains. From beginnings as a post-Ramones punky ensemble (on the first four-track EP), they've gone through an assortment of members and sonic textures but all of their releases have been exercises in good old pop-rock. "Move a Little Closer", a compilation of the band's first two Australian singles ("Igloo" and "A Stand Alone") could easily mix and match with a stack of mod-revival albums, while the squealier and grungier guitar chords of "Date with a Vampyre" (also four songs) nudge their sound closer to garage territory.

"Top of the Town" contains six songs by a new lineup that reveals an ongoing transition towards more mainstream pop-rock. "... In april 1989, Chris Masuak left the Tribesmen to reform the Hitmen. Wackley and Fraser also departed, which left Medew to gather up the pieces. He recruited a new line-up of Glen 'Electric' Morris (lead guitar ; ex-Kings of the Sun) , 'Long' Jeff Silver (bass, ex-Volcanoes, Radio Luxembourg) and Ritchie 'the bandit' Hine (drums, ex-Terrapins, Radio Luxembourg) .

The band issued the 5-track, 12-inch EP 'Take Cover' (august 1989), which comprised all cover versions, including the Dictators' 'Stay with me' , the Allusions' 'Gypsy woman' (also on 'Blood Lust'), Lou Reed's 'I can't stand it' , Shockin' Blue's 'Hot Sand' & Ken Draznik's (from the Vertebrats) 'Left in the dark'.

Morris remained with the band for nine months before returning to the Kings of the Sun. Ex-Girlies, Headstones, Brian Mann took his place, and the band issued the 'Blood Lust' album in March 1991. This lp produced the 12-inch single 'Ayla' with an accoustic version of 'Igloo' & 'Santa's little helper' , on b side (if someone got this 12'...) .

'Blood Lust' included a couple of the band's heaviest ever songs like 'High Priestess', 'Frozen Tracks' , 'Something Dangerous' and 'Queen of the Night Time World' . Survival also issued "High Time - A Collection" in december 1990. German label Normal issued 'Blood Lust' in Europe and the band toured there to a positive response..." I. McFarlane

In 1986 the band broke from Citadel and released the 6 tracks 'Top Of The Town' mini-lp, which moved them strongly toward a mainstream pop-rock sound. The production of this record took some amount of heat in Australia for being too soft, but Medew stands by the record and says he wouldn't change anything about it.

In april 1992 , Chris Masuak ( Radio Birdmen , Hitmen , New Christs , Screaming Tribesmen ) formed the country/r & b-flavoured Juke Savages , issuing a self-titled cd EP on the Phantom label . In late 1993 Red Porter and Gerard Presland (ex Hitmen DTK) replaced Ferguson and Larsen respectively . The Juke Savages issued the full-lengh album : "Pagan rites and big juju on the road to ascension" in 1994 . In early 1996 , C. Masuak rejoined the reformed Radio Birdmen for the national "Radios On !" tour and it was the end of the Juke Savages !

Australian band the Hoodoo Gurus had called it a day after 16 years together and selling a quarter of a million albums worldwide in 1998, and Brad Shepherd, lead guitarist for the Gurus for the majority of those 16 years - as well as having put in noteworthy time with the Hitmen, Super K, the Fun Things, and the 31st before his lengthy career with the Gurus began - found himself without a regular job for the first time in about two decades. By late 1999, the bug to play and create was nagging at him again, and Shepherd sought to do something about it. The Gurus, while rocking plenty enough, had always somewhat been the kings of Australian powerpop with a rock and roll flair, something that worked splendidly for the Gurus.

Yet Shepherd's reputation as Being Sooooooo Rock & Roll within the band was known far and wide - Shepherd covers at Gurus concerts had included rockers by AC/DC and Foghat over the years, among much other hard-rocking fare. He was always sort of the Rock & Roll Animal soul at the heart of the Gurus.

With The Monarchs, he sought out bandmates with whom to create a tremendous but tuneful musical racket, with loud guitars and walloping drums. The plan was to basically launch a musical assault on the senses of the masses for whom techno had become a neurotoxin (to borrow a Shepherd phrase).

The next step was to put together the band that would become The Monarchs. Shepherd found his fellow rock soldiers in Greg Hitchcock, guitarist and Perth native who had played in the Hitmen and with The Verys; Andy Kelly, bass player from Glide; and, once again, Murray Shepherd, former Screaming Tribesmen drummer who had also played with brother Brad in the Fun Things some twenty years before.

The balls-out-rock single 2001, featuring an equally powerful flip side, This Is All I Can Do, was released in August 2000, and hit big on Australian radio. With the single's release and a number of powerful live performances behind them all over Australia, the band went into the studio to record what would be their one and only album, Make Yer Own Fun, spawning the singles Loud and '69 Monaro. Early buzz on the album included reviews that it "sounded akin to an atomic bomb exploding in yer loungeroom" or - even more descriptive - "suspiciously like the MC5 having a fist fight with Badfinger behind the bike sheds after school". If one was searching for the heart and soul of rock and roll among some of the pablum that was passing for modern music at the time - The Monarchs, baby, were IT.

Undeniably the band's greatest strength was in some legendary live performances. The Monarchs had an excellent run for most of 2001, then things began to change. Brad had begun playing again around Sydney with two of the other Gurus in a new psychedelic-60's punk-flavored outfit called The Moops (later to rename themselves the Persian Rugs), and Andy Kelly was growing busier and busier as manager of The Vines.

The Monarchs quietly began to fade away. In late April 2002, Brad announced that The Monarchs had, indeed, ceased to exist. The next six months were relatively silent. Then, in September 2002, an enthusiastic announcement made its way out of The Monarchs' camp.

The Monarchs bounced back, regrouped and rejuvenated, to kick some major rock and roll butt in Sydney that evening in October, with a few more equally amazing gigs following. However, after this last short run and a quick jaunt thru London and Spain in 2003, The Monarchs disappeared into Australian musical history once again - going out with a big, loud bang just like when they'd come in.

The Monarchs - gone (???) but not forgotten... until NOW! The Monarchs are planning to get together for at least one big show in 2008 to make up for the date they were forced to cancel in November 2007. Stay tuned!

Classic Aussie high-energy rock albums reissued in association with new volumes of the acclaimed collection of '70s/80s Australian Punk & Garage Rock'DO THE POP!'
November 3 will see the release of deluxe double-disc reissues of the legendary first two albums by THE HITMEN, comprising members of two recent ARIA Hall of Fame inductees and touring partners, RADIO BIRDMAN and THE HOODOO GURUS.
Formed by Birdmen CHRIS MASUAK and WARWICK GILBERT and Birdman MC JOHNNY KANNIS soon after Birdman's initial demise in '78, THE HITMEN also featured future Gurus mainstays BRAD SHEPHERD and MARK KINGSMILL by the time they came to record their self-titled debut in '81 and its follow-up 'It Is What It is' in '82.
Overlooked for far too long, THE HITMEN'S music is ripe for re-evaluation, and Savage Beat!/Shock's deluxe reissues will provide ample opportunity. Each album will be accompanied by a massive booklet with lengthy notes and numerous images. More importantly, each will be expanded to include about 45 tracks, with a bounty of previously unheard demo and live material added to each set. Hitmen classics like 'Didn't Tell The Man', 'Corridors Of Power', 'Rocket On The Elevator Up' and '15 Hours' will be featured alongside long lost fan favourites like 'Cold December' and 'Wings of Steel', as well as incredible covers of the Sonics, MC5, 13th Floor Elevators, Iggy Pop, Bo Diddley, Blue Oyster Cult, Dictators and the Flamin' Groovies' great 'Shake Some Action'.
Fans of Birdman, the Gurus and the great Australian band's that followed in the Hitmen's wake, like the Screaming Tribesmen and the Lime Spiders, will find the wit and the power of the Hitmen an absolute revelation. The band comprising Jesse The Intruder (vocals), The Grand Wizard (guitar), El Sicoldelico (guitar), The Psychedelic Unknown (bass) and Gorgeous Karl Domah (drums) will re-convene for rehearsals at their headquarters in Pismo Beach, California, before returning to Australia.
The Psychotic Turnbuckles carved a swathe through Australia's rock and roll venues from the early 1980s, relocating from the US after their professional wrestling careers were interrupted by notorious promoter Sammy Duke.
They quickly showed they were the equal of influences like the 13th Floor Elevators, Radio Birdman, the Moving Sidewalks, the Masters Apprentices, The Sonics and The Aztecs by laying waste to the local beer barns and rock hovels.
They shared stages with the likes of The Troggs, the Hitmen, Dark Carnival, Beasts of Bourbon and the Screaming Tribesmen for a decade, fading from the scene as members filtered back to the US.
Their surprise reappearance in Sydney in December 2012 showed the 'Buckles still have the goods to take down any contenders. It sealed a deal with Sydney's legendary Citadel Records - and the rest is history.

Not much was ever written about Porcelain Bus while they were around in the ten year period 1981 to 1991. Since then little has become virtually nothing. And that’s a tragedy, because this was a terrific band that didn’t deserve to be lost amongst Sydney contemporaries like Died Pretty, the Celibate Rifles, New Christs, Happy Hate Me Nots, and a host of other bands that shared the Citadel label with them or appeared on other local labels...
Porcelain Bus actually began in 1980 when Rob, Ian and bassist P. Patrick got together while still in school. They began stumbling about trying to play, influenced both by their local favorites and also by overseas groups ranging fromstraight rock bands like the Who and the Flamin' Groovies, to more off center groups like Pere Ubu, Wire, the Soft Boys, Velvet Underground and the Feelies, to country-edged pop/rock like the Long Ryders and early REM. An eclectic mix, and one that contributed heavily to the unique sound that Porcelain Bus came to have.
The debut single in 1986 launched Porcelain Bus into the midst of a heady time in Australian rock. Overseas recognition of the Australian underground (especially in Europe) was beginning to happen in a significant way, and having a single in the first 25 ever released by the prestigious Sydney label Citadel put Porcelain Bus in the company of labelmates like the New Christs, the Stems, Died Pretty, New Race, the Lime Spiders, the Screaming Tribesmen, the Lipstick Killers, the Bamboos, and the Moffs, assuring that many fans would buy their record just because of the company it kept. When they got it home, they’d invariably find that their trust had been well placed. The single was quickly licensed for release in France by Teenage Records, a spinoff of the excellent French indie label Closer. In those days releasing a single was a big deal, and many indie bands came along slowly where recording was concerned. So for Porcelain Bus, their next recording wasn’t for another year when they released the 1987 single pairing “The Well Is Dry” with “The Hands Have Control”. Recorded in February, the A side of this single is a subdued ballad that could almost be called a folk record if it wasn’t for a strong electric middle eight. Ian’s deep baritone vocal dominates the track. The flip is another story altogether. Beginning with a roar of feedback from Rob and a barbaric scream from Ian, the song is one of the killer Porcelain Bus rockers. The verse by itself powers, but there’s a guitar
bit that leads into the chorus that makes the entire song soar into another dimension. All in all, a wonderful single with two very different tracks that each work magnificently.
Porcelain Bus were back in the studio in July of 1987 to record the six songs that would become the "Steel Bros." mini-lp. A strong record at this point probably would have locked Porcelain Bus into the same level of critical and commercial regard as bands like Died Pretty, but although it’s a pleasant enough record, "Steel Bros." just isn’t the best that Porcelain Bus had in them. A couple years later a German Citadel release handled by the Normal label would combine the six tracks from "Steel Bros." with both sides of the first two singles to make a very solid full length CD called "Sacred Relics"... To those hoping for another Australian masterwork, it came as a bit of a disappointment. But those who kept their allegiance to the band were rewarded, because it turned out that Porcelain Bus did indeed have a classic record in them, and that record was the brilliant 1988 lp "Talking To God". The ten songs on this lp fit together perfectly, with a great mix of strong rockers and softer tracks. It was their fourth time in the studio and third working with Died Pretty guitarist Brett Myers as producer (Rob Younger had done the first single), and it seemed that everyone had learned their role well by this point. The songs have a great sense of dynamics, something that hadn’t always been there before.
After "Talking To God" Porcelain Bus made a heavy commitment to making things happen, touring heavily in Australia. But as often happens, the big push to break things open created fissures in the band, and out of one crack popped John Nolan, who quit as drummer. A. Toole was recruited to replace him, and the band went to record their second lp in February 1990. The resulting eight song collection, prophetically entitled "Fragile", sounded like another strong record to these ears but apparently not to the band.
Shortly after releasing Fragile, Porcelain Bus toured Europe to enthusiastic crowds. Their records were released in Germany, and superficially things were looking good. But on returning to Australia, the band folded..." Toshmeister

HOT KNIVES - Hot Knives

This stunning album is one of the archeological rock finds of the century!
Recorded in '76, never released and not even rumored to exist, this is classic stuff from a band that combined 60's folk rock with muscular rock'n'roll in a sound that was simultaneously a throwback to a more innocent time (think Beau Brummels, early Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape) and a raw and rockin' alternative to the pop-smart mid-'70s Fleetwood Mac.
The 14-track album, comprising material recorded at 3 sessions in local studios in '76, has languished in a cupboard for over 30 years. Only two singles from it ever saw the light of day at the time; the second one, 'I Hear The Wind Blow', prompted the greatest of pop pickers, the late Greg Shaw, to declare in his Bomp! newsletter that "The Hot Knives are the best thing happening in San Francisco right now; their second self-made 45 is just out...They're not punk rock, it's folk-rock with female vocals ala early Jeff. Airplane, with warm harmonies and gorgeous Byrds guitar."

*Grown Up Wrong! Records is a rock'n'roll label based in Melbourne, Australia. It was originally active from 1986 to 1989, releasing records by Real Kids offshoot the Primitive Souls, punk-era Brisbane big beat combo the Survivors, and great late-'80s rock'n'roll combos like the Lazy Cowgirls, Bored, Clawhammer and Crawlspace, before evolving into the slightly better known Dog Meat Records.
Dog Meat released more of the same plus stuff, plus more by the Powder Monkeys, Cheater Slicks, Hoss, the Pretty Things, the Imperial Dogs, the Dirty Lovers, Billy Childish, Thee Headcoats, the Real Kids, Dead Moon and others.
Grown Up Wrong! returns in September with the release of a new live album by Adelaide 70's power pop greats Young Modern, and unreleased album from '76 by Flamin' Groovies offshoot Hot Knives, and two archival releases by '80s Aussie high-energy garage pop-rockers the Screaming Tribesmen.

In april 1992 , Chris Masuak ( Radio Birdmen , Hitmen , New Christs , Screaming Tribesmen ) formed the country/r & b-flavoured Juke Savages , issuing a self-titled cd EP on the Phamtom label . In late 1993 Red Porter and Gerard Presland (ex Hitmen DTK) replaced Ferguson and Larsen respectively . The Juke Savages issued the full-lengh album : "Pagan rites and big juju on the road to ascension" in 1994 . In early 1996 , C. Masuak rejoined the reformed Radio Birdmen for the national "Radios On !" tour and it was the end of the Juke Savages !
