The dB's: Gene Holder: bass / Will Rigby: drums / Chris Stamey: guitar, vocals, keyboards / Peter Holsapple: guitar, vocals, keyboards.

Playing sharp, tuneful songs with a hint of psychedelia and some challenging melodic angles, the dB's were the band that bridged the gap between classic '70s power pop (defined by bands such as Big Star, Badfinger, and the Scruffs) and the jangly new wave of smart pop, personified by R.E.M. And while the dB's spent the bunk of their career living and working on the East Coast, they were the among the first and most important representatives of the Southern branch of the new wave; most of the group's members hailed from North Carolina, bringing a Southern warmth to music that sometimes sounded cold and spare in the hands of others.

While the latter-day dB's releases -- the ones released after Chris Stamey left the group -- were all good, sometimes great, jangly power pop, it was the early Stamey/Holsapple years that made them truly memorable. Neverland is a two-fer that collects the entirety of the first two dB's albums, Stands for Decibels and Repercussion, onto a single disc along with one bonus track each. The quality of the Stamey/Holsapple dynamic is spelled out here: Peter Holsapple's more straight-ahead pop gems alternate with the paranoid, quirky Stamey tracks and, while the differences can be difficult to digest at first, the undeniable hookiness in all the material makes this accessible even to non-fans. In the 18 years between the original issue of these albums and this reissue, the music has barely aged: "Amplifier" sounds as radio-ready as ever, and Stamey's Beach Boys-esque pastiche, "She's Not Worried," still sounds current. The two bonus tracks -- "Baby Talk" and "Soul Kiss" -- are a bit more chaotic than the albums themselves, but are fitting additions nonetheless. The music of the dB's was never really in or out of style, but the fractured, spontaneous brand of pop on their first two albums has proven to be the blueprint for many to follow. Although available only as a German import, the collection is budget-priced, putting this great music at the fingertips of fans. Allmusic

On their debut, the dB's combined a reverence for British pop and arty, post-punk leanings that alternate between minimalism and a love of quirky embellishment, odd sounds, and unexpected twists; Stands for Decibels is clearly a collegiate pop experiment, but rarely is experimentation so enjoyable and irresistibly catchy. Singing and songwriting duties are shared equally by Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple -- Stamey, more quirky and psychedelic-leaning with a winsome, pure-pop whine, is nicely balanced by Holsapple's more earthy drawl and straightforward approach. The album stands not only as a landmark power-pop album, but also as a prototype for much of the Southern jangle that would follow. [Stands for Decibels remained criminally unavailable in the U.S. for years. When IRS reissued it on CD in 1989, Holsapple's "Judy" was added as a bonus track.] Allmusic

Repercussion is very much of a piece with the debut, repeating much of the same formula that made Stands for Decibels great -- terrific harmonies, winning melodies, and catchy hooks with subtle quirks thrown into the mix. This time, they feature a fuller, more polished sound, but the impact of the songs isn't diminished. Stamey left shortly after Repercussion to pursue a solo career. ["pH Factor" was added as a bonus track to the IRS CD reissue in 1989.] Allmusic
Great name for a band! Arriving in 2010 via some pretty sweet influences from back in the days when great bands were everywhere, or so it seemed, it came as no shock then that '1-2-3-4' was going to kick the album off in true 'Pipeline' style, coming across as sort of a little bit 'Pirate Love' but, hey, why the fuck not?

'Hoppin' Cretin' sees the introduction of some vocals and the snotty by name, snotty in style Dave Snotty sneers and gives it heaps whilst the boys in the engine room dish out the rock 'n' roll. If you're gonna ape some bands then you might as well go right to the top of the food chain in my humble opinion and ape the Ramones and The Heartbreakers, right? It's not rocket science what these Canadians are about and God bless 'em for just wanting to play the type of music they so obviously love and credit to them as they have a fistfull of insane tunes to back it up with. 'Black Leather Jacket' has every lick and fill from Chuck Berry's repertoire all neatly fisted into the top pocket of this number - it's rapid, catchy and does exactly what it says on the album cover.

On this evidence it is all about the fun and playing some wicked rock 'n' roll while you're at it. On every play I get a little tip of the hat to such greats as The Boys on stuff like 'One Night Luv', a bit of 'Seven Day Weekend' on 'Pretty Rock 'n' Roll Baby' mashed up with some 70's proper glam. Some Buzzcocks and Addicts in there as well for good measure and we also have the love torn balladeering on 'Cigarette Flavoured Lips' and I'm not sure if it's Tyla or The Babysitters but I do know it doesn't matter what well they drank from for each song because the final result is a killer record that'll put a smile on yer face and a spring in yer step.

Album closer 'Tonight' just about sums up the whole groove of the album - fun, fun and some more fun. But it should also be all about The Bators because on this evidence they have style, attitude, suss and a whole lot of toe tappin' tunes - Young, loud and wonderfully snotty. The Bators rule!
Produced By The Cowgirls & Eric Stone.

The Lazy Cowgirls: Pat Todd: lead vocals, guitar / Allen Clark: drums / D.D. Weekday (Doug Phillips): guitar / Keith Telligman: bass.

If The Ramones had been a road-tested biker gang instead of pop-obsessed cartoon speed merchants, they might have sounded something like The Lazy Cowgirls. Merging the buzzsaw roar of first-wave punk, the sneering attitude of '60's garage rock, the heart-on-your-sleeve honesty of honky-tonk, and the self-assured swagger of The Rolling Stones, The Lazy Cowgirls play raw, sweaty outlaw rock and roll at its most furiously passionate and physically intense; like a Harley gunned up to 95 mph, The Lazy Cowgirls may not sound safe, but they sure are fun.

Vocalist Pat Todd, guitarist D.D. Weekday, and bassist Keith Telligman left their hometown of Vincennes, Indiana in 1981 to move to California, hoping to get a rock band off the ground. In 1983, they finally settled on fellow Indiana refugee Allen Clark as a drummer, and began hitting the L.A. club circuit as The Lazy Cowgirls. After countless shows playing to "no one, and people from work" (according to Todd), the band caught the ear of Chris Desjardins (aka Chris D.), former leader of art-punks The Flesh Eaters. Desjardins got the band a deal with Restless Records, and produced their self-titled debut LP in 1984. The album didn't quite reflect the band's powerhouse live show, and they were soon dropped from the label. After two years of local shows and occasional touring, Bomp Records came to the rescue by releasing the band's second long-player, Tapping The Source, which came much closer in capturing the fire of their live show on plastic, and merged fifth-gear originals like "Goddamn Bottle" and "Can't You Do Anything Right?" with stripped-down covers of "Justine" and "Heartache." The following year, the newly-founded indie label Sympathy For The Record Industry opened for business with Radio Cowgirl, a souvenir of the band's high-octane live set at KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara.

Following yet another bout of long touring, the band cut the near-definitive How It Looks -- How It Is in 1990, but years of hard work with little commercial reward began to take their toll, and at the end of 1991 Telligman and Clark quit the group. The Cowgirls' rhythm section became something of a revolving door for the next few years, and while The Lazy Cowgirls cut a handful of singles and EP's for various small labels, conventional wisdom had it that the band had called it quits. But in 1995, the Cowgirls re-emerged with a new album, the superb Ragged Soul, and a seemingly stable lineup, with Todd and Weekday now joined by Michael Leigh on rhythm guitar, Ed Huerta on drums, and Leonard Keringer on bass. The band toured the United States and Europe, but 1996 brought more personnel shake-ups, as D.D. Weekday and Ed Huerta both turned in their notices. Bob Deagle signed on as drummer in time for 1997's A Little Sex and Death, with Eric Chandler sitting in on guitar. By 1999, Michael Leigh had rejoined the band on guitar, and almost 20 years after leaving Indiana, the indefatigable Pat Todd began pushing the The Lazy Cowgirls harder than ever, with the band spending plenty of time on the road and releasing two solid albums on Sympathy within six months of each other, Rank Outsider and Somewhere Down The Line. The live album, Here and Now: Live was issued in summer 2001. 2004 found the band recording for a new label, Reservation Records, and releasing their strongest new album in years, the rootsy I'm Going Out And Get Hurt Tonight. Allmusic

How It Looks — How It Is never downshifts from overdrive, but the wheels are often left spinning. Generic blitzkrieg bops like "Teenage Frankenstein" and "Sex Kittens Compare Scratches" are conceptually hackneyed and musically shopworn. Then again, Todd's sneering delivery alone can carry hate missives like the title track, "Alienation Maybe," "Cheap Shit," the very Pagans-like "D.I.E. in Indiana" and other testimonials to the desperate life. The subsequent CD edition adds a remixed version of the Australian Third Time's the Charm EP, minus the interview that originally accompanied the five tracks. The sound on Third Time's the Charm is inferior to the band's other stuff, but completists won't care. TrouserPress

Richard Hell was one of the first men on the scene when punk rock first began to emerge in New York City as an early member of both Television and the Heartbreakers (he left both groups before they could record), but his own version of punk wasn't much like anyone else's, and while Hell's debut album, Blank Generation, remains one of the most powerful to come from punk's first wave, anyone expecting a Ramones/Dead Boys-style frontal assault from this set had better readjust their expectations. "Love Comes in Spurts" and "Liar's Beware" proved the Voidoids could play fast and loud when they wanted to, but for the most part this group's formula was much more complicated than that; guitarists Robert Quine and Ivan Julian bounced sharp, edgy patterns off each other that were more about psychological tension than brute force (though Quine's solos suggest a fragile grace beneath the surface of their neo-Beefheart chaos), and while most punk nihilism was of the simplistic "Everything Sucks" variety, Hell was (with the exception of Patti Smith) the most literate and consciously poetic figure in the New York punk scene. While there's little on the album that's friendly or life-affirming, there's a crackling intelligence to songs like "New Pleasure," "Betrayal Takes Two," and "Another World" that confirmed Hell has a truly unique lyrical voice, at once supremely self-confident and dismissive of nearly everything around him (sometimes including himself). Brittle and troubling, but brimming with ideas and musical intelligence, "Blank Generation" was groundbreaking punk rock that followed no one's template, and today it sounds just as fresh -- and nearly as abrasive -- as it did when it first hit the racks. Allmusic

Richard Hell grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, in the 1950s. His father, a secular Jew, was an experimental psychologist, researching animal behavior. He died when Hell was seven years old. Hell was then raised by his mother, who came from Methodists of Welsh and English ancestry. After her husband's death, she returned to school and eventually became a professor.

Hell attended the Sanford School in Delaware for one year, where he became friends with Tom Miller, who later changed his name to Tom Verlaine). They ran away from school together and were arrested in Alabama for arson and vandalism a short time later.

Hell never finished high school, instead moving to New York City to make his way as a poet. In New York he met fellow young poet, David Giannini, and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico for several months, where Giannini and Meyers co-founded "Genesis:Grasp". They used an AM VariTyper with changeable fonts to publish the magazine. They began publishing books and magazines but decided to go their separate ways in 1971, after which Hell created and published Dot Books. Before he was twenty-one his own poems were published in numerous periodicals, ranging from Rolling Stone to the New Directions Annuals. Along with Tom Verlaine, in 1971 Hell also published under the pseudonym Theresa Stern, a fictional poet whose photo was actually a combination of both his and Verlaine's faces, in drag, superimposed over one another to create a new identity.

In 1972, Verlaine joined Hell in New York and formed the Neon Boys. In 1974 the band added a second guitarist, Richard Lloyd, and changed their name to Television.

Television's performances at CBGB helped kick-start the first wave of punk bands, inspiring a number of different artists including Patti Smith, who wrote the first press review of Television for the Soho Weekly News in June 1974. She had an affair with Tom Verlaine, and formed a highly successful band of her own, The Patti Smith Group. Television was one of the early bands to play at CBGB, and persuaded owner Hilly Kristal to book rock bands there on a regular basis. They also built the club's first stage.

Hell started playing his song "Blank Generation" during his stint in Television. In 1975, Hell parted ways with Television after a dispute over creative control. Hell claimed that he and Verlaine had originally divided the songwriting evenly but that later Verlaine refused to play Hell's songs. Verlaine remains characteristically silent on the subject.

Hell left Television the same week that Jerry Nolan and Johnny Thunders quit the New York Dolls. In May 1975 the three of them formed The Heartbreakers; not to be confused with Tom Petty's band, which adopted the same name the following year. After one show Walter Lure joined The Heartbreakers as a second guitarist.

A year later, in early 1976, Hell quit The Heartbreakers and started Richard Hell and the Voidoids with Robert Quine, Ivan Julian and Marc Bell. The band released two albums, though the second, "Destiny Street", retained only Quine from the original group, with Naux (Juan Maciel) on guitar and Fred Maher on drums, and suffered from Hell's distractions, narcotics especially, during recording.[citation needed] Hell's best known songs with the Voidoids were "Blank Generation", "Love Comes in Spurts", "The Kid With the Replaceable Head" and "Time". In 2009, the guitar tracks on "Destiny Street" were re-recorded and released as "Destiny Street Repaired", with guitarists Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, and Ivan Julian playing with the original rhythm tracks. Also in 2009, Richard Hell gave his blessing to the public access program Pancake Mountain to create an animated music video for "The Kid with the Replaceable Head". It would be the Voidoids first, and only, official music video. The cut used for the animation appears on Hell's 2005 retrospective album, Spurts, The Richard Hell Story.

Billy Rath, bassist with Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, has died at the age of 66 after a long illness.
He replaced Richard Hell in the New York punk outfit in 1976 and appeared on the band’s iconic album LAMF in 1977. They were lined up to appear alongside the Sex Pistols on the British band’s doomed Anarchy In The UK tour, then split up later the same year.
The Heartbreakers continued to reform for occasional shows, but Rath bowed out in 1985 and did not return. After a short stint as a member of Iggy Pop’s band he retrained as a psychologist and began working as an addiction counsellor. He’d been working with his own band, Billy Rath’s Street Pirates, until his illness forced him to move into a care home. He left the facility to be with his family in his final days.
Commenting on the Heartbreakers' notoriety, the bassist said in a 2012 interview: “We didn't make trouble – we made and played NYC rock ’n’ roll. The Heartbreakers were a rock 'n' roll band, not a punk band that pushed anarchy. We wrote love songs, not fight songs.”
He added: “When I joined, in my opinion and others’, I completed the band. It was like I was the missing link that completed the sound they were looking for. The tension was gone and the magic started. Richard Hell needed to have his own sound – he was a poet and a very good one at that. That was the tension. I came along and completed the sound.”
Rath’s death leaves guitarist Walter Lure as the only surviving member of the classic Heartbreakers lineup.
In the year 1986, the Dogs teamed up with a friend named Gilles Tandy to make a record called "La Colère Monte". Gilles Tandy had been in the French cult band the Olivensteins. The songs on this album are all sung in French by Tandy, and the album was released by New Rose records under his name, but Dominique and Antoine both contributed heavily to the songwriting and the guitar sound and overall atmosphere is strongly reminiscent of the Dogs (though with Tandy singing in French instead of Dominique in English there is at the same time a marked difference as well). Tributes are flowing for much-loved Happy Hate Me Nots and former New Christs and Someloves member Christian Houllemare who has passed away.

A long-time Australian resident, the French-born bassist was found at his home in Sydney’s inner-west over the weekend.

One of the nicest guys on the Australian underground rock scene and a widely respected bass-player, Christian was a native of Le Havre and played in French melodic high energy band Bad Brains (no relation to the US outfit) before emigrating.

He joined Sydney's Happy Hate Me Nots and played on their best known recordings, re-joining band leader Paul Berwick in the re-constituted line-up in the ‘00s.

Christian was a member of the New Christs from 1992-2001 and played on the “We Got This” and “Lower Yourself” albums.

In 2000 he worked in Sydney as an interpreter for the French Olympic team and had been a long-term employee with the Australian Performing Arts Association (APRA), the royalty collection agency for musicians. The Barman

So there was this impeccably stylish, incorrigible rogue named FRANCOIS, right? He had THE BEST HAIR IN ROCK'N'ROLL. A haircut that killed, man. He spent years charming the drinks off every girl in L.A., and he had this really cool, stripped-down kinda punkabilly band called MOTORCYCLE BOY. They specialized in these very rudimentary, but energetic, Bo-Diddley derivative glam romps, sorta like THE JONESES, without the death-trip. They were alot of fun and covered Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas" and they were always nattily adorned in Cuban heels and sharkskin suit jackets and they wrote dumb Ramonesey songs about what a girl magnet their drummer, Kenney Toye was. All the girls loved Eden, too, but FRANCOIS' hair was always the real star of the show. Everybody loved them, even though they lacked a certain technical ability. These guys weren't musicians, these guys were PERSONALITIES. They played big, hollow-body guitars! They had perfect haircuts! They were stars! They had PRESENCE! You know those goggles that Nikki Sixx wore on his head in the "Dr.Feelgood" video? He copped that whole vibe off FRANCOIS! Francois just oozes panache. The phrase "Personality King" was first coined to describe Francois.

Enter MISTER RATBOY: a Thunders-style guitar virtuoso from Switzerland, who'd grown up loving 70's prog-rock bands like Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator. After a month long "audition" that Ratboy once described as being more like a drinking contest, with Francois asking all the local foxes if they thought Ratboy was "cute enough". All the local foxes and Francois' unstoppable hair-do finally agreed that Mister Ratboy had what it takes to be a MOTORCYCLE BOY!

Then, former N.Y. DOLL, SYLVAIN SYLVAIN, came into the picture, producing their highly anticipated debut for Triple X Records. In between the usual Motorcycle Boy life-style hijinks and sending Syl out for more cheeseburgers and onion rings, the world famous Mister Ratboy managed to somehow harness all that FRANCOIS personality long enough to capture a brand new, sleeker, high-performance, MOTORCYCLE BOY model. Most of the songs stayed short and sweet, catchy and upbeat- like "SUICIDE" ("If you love me, it's like suicide") and "THAT'S WHAT SHE WANTS". The theme to most of these songs seemed to be summed up best by the simple line, "She's tired of me sleepin' all over town." The trials and tribulations of playing the wicked rogue'. Apparently, it ain't all roses. Every song smokes! Each tune's a classic in it's own way, even the throwaways "Swamp Stomp" and "Honolulu Baby" (club days Van Halen title) were contagiously fun.At some point during the making of this album, however, egos flared. FRANCOIS' HAIRCUT kinda havin' a showdown with RATBOY'S RIFF. (Cue: N.Y. DOLLS "SHOWDOWN").

FRANCOIS immediately replaced Ratboy with some guy that just wasn't very good, and charmed the record label into reshooting the album cover with the new guy. When the record was released, Ratboy was merely listed as one of several "additional musicians", in spite of nearly single-handedly master-minding the entire winning formula- from bringing all the hooks to the table, to "helping" Syl produce, to conceptualizing the same photos that were later reshot without him. "POPSICLE" remains one of the most enduringly listenable, and highly influential, rock'n'roll albums of the past 15 years. Today, you can most vividly hear the impact MOTORCYCLE BOY had on current bands like the STAR SPANGLES. Various artists, such as the New Bomb Turks, the Dishes, and Bebe Buell have all covered their unforgettable songs.
Red Lightning Blues / Rockability / Rebelene / Nervous Breakdown / Every Tear That Falls / Temper Sure Is Risin' / When The Sky Comes Tumblin' Down / She Thinks I'm Trash / Love Is Repaid By Love Alone / Rosie In The Middle / So Young, So Bad, So What / The Rain Washed Everything Away.
Produced by L. Paine, B. Setzer, D. A. Stewart & C. Thomas.
Brian Setzer: guitar & vocals / Tommy Byrnes: bass / Jerry Angel, Olle Romo, Denny Fongheiser: drums / Bruce Willis: harmonica / Frank Marino: accordian / Marc Levy & Wendy Fraser: background vocals.

After the Stray Cats broke up, Brian Setzer took a long walk from his rockabilly past with his first solo album, 1986's The Knife Feels Like Justice, but while it was a fine LP and a modest success, later that year the Stray Cats reunited for the first of many times to record Rock Therapy, and by the time Setzer made his way back to the studio on his own, he'd seemingly grown tired of his new heartland rock gestures and dove back into the retro style that had made his name. While 1988's "Live Nude Guitars" leans toward rockabilly and uptempo roots rock, the production (mostly by Setzer and Larson Paine, though Dave Stewart and Chris Thomas work on a few tracks) is a lot slicker than anything the Stray Cats ever put to wax, and the big, glossy sound of "Rockability," "Red Lightning Blues," and "She Thinks I'm Trash" tends to work against the songs, and the synthesizer line and drum machine on "When the Sky Comes Tumblin' Down" are simply cringe-inducing.

Setzer does offer a few flashes of the more contemplative direction of The Knife Feels Like Justice on "Every Tear That Falls" and "Love Is Repaid by Love Alone," but they don't work especially well in this context, and the widescreen ballad "The Rain Washed Everything Away" is an odd closer for the album. Setzer demonstrates some typically fine guitar work on Live Nude Guitars, but it's a creative hodgepodge that desperately needs a cleaner focus, and suggests he was in need of a new creative direction; the next time Setzer was heard from as a solo artist, he was fronting his big band, the Brian Setzer Orchestra.
Roddy Radalj’s influence on Australian punk rock is as significant as it is enigmatic. Born in country West Australia to immigrant parents, Radalj came of musical age in the potent and parochial Perth punk scene of the mid to late 1970s, alongside such punk rock legends as Kim Salmon, James Baker, Dave Faulkner and Boris Sudjovic.
Despite having a musical pedigree that reads like a first edition expose of Australian rock’n’roll – founding member of The Scientists, The Johnnys, Le Hoodoo Gurus and The Dubrovniks – Radalj’s position in Australian music history continues to be overshadowed by his propensity for leaving his bands just as they were on the brink of making the leap from cult interest to critical and commercial success.
Having left The Dubrovniks in the late 1980s, Radalj forged out on his own with some new rare-as-hen’s-teeth solo records, before returning to his native Western Australia in the mid 1990s. Radalj’s most recent album, "Guns, Girls and Guitars" (Timberyard Records) surprised many of his fans with its blend of surf, garage and eclectic European styles. But in many ways it was his quintessential record – for with Radalj, the only attribute that’s to be expected is the unexpected. Source
Born in Dubrovnik, Croatia, former Yugoslavia, Radalj got his start with Perth punk band The Exterminators who, via The Invaders, eventually became The Scientists in May 1978. Their earliest line-up were Kim Salmon (later a crucial member of the Beasts of Bourbon and The Surrealists) and ex-Victims drummer James Baker. Radalj stayed long enough in The Scientists to appear on their debut single, "Frantic Romantic", long regarded as one of the most collectable artefacts of the Australian punk rock era.

His next band Rockets issued one single, "Mean Mistress" before Roddy relocated to Sydney where, in January 1981, he joined Baker, Dave Faulkner (another Perth expatriate and ex-leader of the Victims) and Kimble Rendall (ex-XL Capris) as founders of Le Hoodoo Gurus. Their debut single, "Leilani" on the Phantom label (October, 1982) was an instant classic: it had three lead guitars and no bass. Just as the single appeared Radalj left the band (which became Hoodoo Gurus) to form irreverent cow-punk trio The Johnnys, nevertheless he had been a Guru long enough to have co-written with Faulkner several outstanding songs - "Leilani", "(Let's All) Turn On", "Arthur" and "Death Ship" - which appeared on the band's 1984 debut album, "Stoneage Romeos". Hoodoo Gurus iconic status on the Australian rock scene was acknowledged when they were inducted into the 2007 ARIA Hall of Fame.

Once again, Radalj only remained long enough with The Johnnys to appear on one single, "I Think You're Cute".

In 1985, Radalj together with James Baker (ex Hoodoo Gurus) released a single, a cover of The Troggs’ "I Can’t Control Myself" with an original, "Born to Be Punched" on the B-side. The single was credited to The James Baker Experience. In 1986 Radalj teamed up again with Baker (by then ex-Beasts of Bourbon), plus Boris Sujdovic (ex-Rockets, The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon) and Peter Simpson (ex-Spectre's Revenge) as the Adorable Ones. Within a year the Adorable Ones had renamed themselves the Dubrovniks in honour of the fact that both Radalj and Sujdovic had been born in the historical Croatian city of Dubrovnik. The band's clattering yet accessible rock'n'roll appealed on record in the shape on two 1988 singles for the Citadel label, "Fireball of Love" and "My Coo Ca Choo" and contributed to their album Dubrovnik Blues before Radalj was involved in fisticuffs onstage at the Greek Theatre in Melbourne and he moved on again. His next sideline project, the Punjabbers, issued one single, "Rock'n'Roll Loveletters", on the original Timberyard label in 1988.
With backing from his own band, Roddy Ray'Da & the Surfin' Caesars (including Bill Gibson (ex-Eastern Dark), Gye Bennetts (ex-Tablewaiters) and Jim Leone and Paul Larsen from the Celibate Rifles), Radalj released his debut solo album in 1989. Produced by ex-Radio Birdman and Hitmen member Chris Masuak, "Lost Lonely and Vicious" was an immediate success on the Australian independent charts. As well as producing the single "Dynamite Party" the album included a rip-roarin’ cover of the Dictators’ "Master Race Rock". The second album, "Orgazmatazz", was brimming with dexterous trash rock and a healthy sense of the absurd, as epitomised by tracks such as "Hammer the Motor", "Hellcat's Howl", "Galaxy Girl" and "Evil Woman in a Mini Skirt". Guitarist John Freckleton replaced Bill Gibson for the "Orgazmatazz" line up.

Following one more album in 1993, "Mouthful of Chicken", Radalj returned to Perth in order to attend to family matters.
In 2005 he released "Guns Girls & Guitars" on the Timberyard Records label, the album was put together over a lengthy period, in four different studios, with the aid of fellow musicians Murry Cook, Matt Reddell, Mick Radalj, Simon Goodridge, Reg Zar, Lucy DeSoto, Rose Tattoo's Pete Wells, Chris Welsh, Bob Spencer and others. In late 2006 Radalj formed his latest band, The Smokin’ Eldorados, sharing guitar and vocal duties with Matthew de la Hunty (Tall Tales and True), and initially with drummer Reg Zar (The Elks, Bhundu Boys and with Jeff Martin from The Tea Party) and bassist James Rogers (The Fault, Harlequin League). Rogers being replaced with Laurie Sinagra (sound engineer, who has worked with Jebediah, Downsyde, Dom Mariani, Sodastream, Gyroscope and Turnstyle) and Zar with Tim Bates.

The Rezillos are a punk/new wave band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1976. Although emerging at the same time as other bands in the punk rock movement, the Rezillos did not share the nihilism or social commentary of their contemporaries, but instead took a more light-hearted approach to their songs, preferring to describe themselves at the time as "a New Wave beat group". Their songs are heavily influenced by 1950s rock and roll, 1960s English beat music and garage rock, early 1970s glam rock, and recurring lyrical themes of science fiction and B movies, influences that mirrored those of US bands the Cramps and the B-52s who were starting out at the same time. The Rezillos' biggest hit in their home country was the UK Top 20 single "Top of the Pops" in 1978, but they are best known outside the UK for their cover version of "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight", which featured on the soundtrack to Jackass: The Movie in 2002. Since the Rezillos recorded it, the song has been covered by other punk bands, including Youth Brigade and Murphy's Law.
Released in July 1978, the Rezillos' only studio album "Can't Stand the Rezillo"s is now considered a classic album of the first wave of British punk, but the group split up four months after its release, following internal arguments about their future direction. After the Rezillos split the band's guitarist and principal songwriter Jo Callis briefly joined a couple of unsuccessful Edinburgh post-punk groups, before being invited to join The Human League. He went on to co-write some of The Human League's best known songs during their most successful period, including their biggest worldwide hit, "Don't You Want Me". The Rezillos' vocalists Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife formed the Revillos, a group with an ever-changing line-up that continued where the Rezillos left off. The Revillos split up in 1985, briefly reforming in 1994 for a tour of Japan, and again in 1996 for a UK tour. In 2001 the Rezillos reformed after being invited to play at Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations, and have continued to play live ever since, as well as releasing new singles occasionally. Wikipedia

Emerging more than a year after Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds broke a nation's heart by dismantling the Rezillos, the Revillos' Rev Up debut set the stage, immediately, for a mission that was going to take the last band's sound into an entirely new universe -- one that had, sad to say, already been visited by the B-52's' and the Cramps' recent doings, but which was nevertheless ripe for serious exploration.

A dramatic hybrid of day-glo rockabilly, B-movie glitter, and post-punk trash, Rev Up is a howling good time, a blur of wacked intentions and wired energies that settle for a moment on one, two, a dozen classic boogies, but never hang around for long, because there's always another planet to build a drive-in on.

And so, "Secret of the Shadow" blurs into the title track; "The Rock-A-Boom" leaks into "Voodoo"; and the semi-classic single "Motorbike Beat" incinerates everything in sight. Allmusic.com

Following the drug-fueled implosion of the Heartbreakers, Johnny Thunders bounced back with his first solo outing, "So Alone". Featuring a veritable who's who of '70s punk and hard rock -- Chrissie Hynde, Phil Lynott, Peter Perrett, Steve Marriott, Paul Cook, and Steve Jones, among others -- the record was a testament to what the former New York Dolls guitarist could accomplish with a little focus. Much like Thunders' best work with the Dolls and Heartbreakers, "So Alone" is a gloriously sloppy amalgam of R&B, doo wop, and three-chord rock & roll. Despite the inevitable excesses that plagued every Thunders recording session, Steve Lillywhite's solid engineering job and a superb set of songs hold everything together. A cover of the Chantays' classic instrumental "Pipeline" leads things off, and is a teasing reminder of what a great guitarist Thunders could be when he put his mind to it. The record's indisputable masterpiece is "You Can't Put Your Arms Round a Memory," a wrenching, surprisingly literate ballad in which Thunders seems to acknowledge that his junkie lifestyle has doomed him to the abyss.
Songs like "Leave Me Alone," "Hurtin'," and the chilling title track continue the theme of life inside the heroin balloon. Fortunately, all this back-alley gloom is leavened by some memorably animated moments. "London Boys" is a scathing reply to the Sex Pistols' indictment of the New York punk scene, "New York." The funky "Daddy Rolling Stone" features the inimitable Lynott on background vocals, while the rave-ups "Great Big Kiss" and "(She's So) Untouchable" are terrific examples of Thunders' raunchy take on classic R&B. Sadly, Johnny Thunders never followed up on the promise of his solo debut. His subsequent records were a frustrating mix of drug-addled mediocrity and downright laziness. But for one brief moment, he seemed to put it all together. That moment is "So Alone". Allmusic.com

For his first solo LP, the legendary New York Dolls/Heartbreakers guitarist enlisted the aid of ex- Pistols Paul Cook and Steve Jones, some of the Hot Rods, the Only Ones and even old-timers Steve Marriott and Phil Lynott. Choosing material representative of all his prior musical phases, and aided immeasurably by co-producer Steve Lillywhite, Thunders turns in reasonably strong performances, perfectly employing his gutter guitar and New York sneer in a number of (musical) veins, including greasy R&B and a tender ballad. Not since the Dolls' two records has he sounded so lucid and involved — So Alone is Johnny Thunders at his best. The reissue adds two previously unissued cuts, "So Alone" and "The Wizard." Trouser Press

The Chevelles: Duane Smith: guitars & vocals / Julian Buckland: drums & vocals / Adrian Allen: guitars & vocals / Jeff Halley: bass.

The Chevelles are a power pop band from Perth, Western Australia. They formed in 1989 and have toured Australia, Europe, the United States and South America. The band took its name from the Chevrolet Chevelle. They played their first headline show at the Coronado Hotel on 15 December 1989. They soon came to the attention of independent labels across the country, including the Sydney-based Zero Hour Records (named after the Plimsouls' tune) operated by former Stems roadie George Matzkov.

''Rollerball Candy'' was released by Running Circle in early 1995. The album was more varied than "Gigantic", displaying a punk sound in "Delirium" and including a melodic ballad called "Fall". Its 15 tracks made it a long album for a pop group but in essence it was tailor-made for Spanish rock and roll fans.
Initial sales of the record in Spain and Portugal were encouraging. Response from Spanish press and radio was excellent. The record received strong reviews in established Spanish rock zines like Ruta 66, Beaten Generation and La Musica, in which the band were compared to DM3 and The Dubrovniks.
Sales and promotion of "Rollerball Candy" were slower in Australia. With no distribution deal the band relied on sales at shows and through a small number of Perth and eastern states record stores. It became apparent that fans in Sydney and Melbourne were unaware that a new album been released. At the same time Running Circle's European distribution campaign was floundering. There was no evidence that the disc had was being distributed or promoted outside of Spain.
Around this time Smith put together a band called Rollercoaster to play some songs he thought unsuitable for the Chevelles. Teaming up with Grant Ferstat (ex-Month of Sundays), Dave Shaw of The Stems and Boom Babies) and friend Craig Maclean, he recorded an 11-track rock album. At the time Smith thought it might be well received in the ever-hungry Spanish rock scene. The album eventually was released in mid-1999 on Spanish power pop label Snap Records.

In mid-1996 news was received from Spain that Running Circle was bankrupt. This annulled the Chevelles' contract with the label. Rollerball Candy had been released almost 18 months earlier and had not succeeded, through poor distribution and promotion. The band resolved to take the record back to the market. Smith contacted Paradoxx Music, a Brazilian dance music label that had distributed Gigantic from Survival and had sold several thousand copies of the record, and went to Brazil to negotiate a Rollerball Candy release. An agreement was formed but the deal fell apart when Paradoxx restructured and restaffed.
Notwithstanding Running Circle's demise the band continued to have a strong following in Spain. Smith and Allen played three acoustic shows in Madrid in January 1997.
Later that year, after six months of sporadic playing in Perth, and with continuing frustration with overseas record labels, the band sought a new deal in Australia. David Hughes-Owen, the manager of Perth power pop label Spinning Top, had known members of the band for several years. Smith had actually offered Rollerball Candy to Hughes-Owen for Australian release in January 1995, but at the time the label felt it didn't have the money or network to support the album. Spinning Top put together an Australian power pop compilation called Pop on Top for U.S. label Bomp! Records, using the Chevelles' "She's Not Around" as the lead track. The compilation was released in 1996 and was well received in the U.S., where Spinning Top discovered the Chevelles had a small but strong fanbase.
In 1997 the Chevelles and Spinning Top formed an agreement to see if the label could market Rollerball Candy. Spinning Top had a long association with U.S. label Not Lame, whose manager Bruce Brodeen was a fan of Australia pop and regularly stocked records from Australia in his mail order catalogue. Brodeen was a fan of the Chevelles and accepted Spinning Top's offer of an opportunity to release some Chevelles material. The band had obtained the rights to its back catalogue so Not Lame had the choice of all tracks recorded by the band back since 1992. Brodeen put together a 'Best Of'-style compilation titled "At Second Glance", concentrating on the band's melodic pop sound rather than its rock aspect. The high-energy machine PRIMA DONNA from Los Angeles will be back in Europe in spring 2014! The band has only been on the scene for some years now, yet in that time have knocked out over 600 shows all over the world, toured with Green Day and Adam Ant and played successfully 5 European tours on their own.
Their live show is a whirlwind of color, energy, bravado, volume and an avalanche of catchy, sing-along choruses. A band you won’t forget anymore, once you have seen them live on stage.

Best remembered for their smartly suited, tightly riffing contributions to the late-'70s mod revival, the Jolt were, in fact, one of the few bands who not only straddled the divide between classic punk and that more specialist sound, they were also the only ones who could give label- (and genre-) mates a run for their money. Debuting in late 1977 with the sparkling "All I Can Do" single, the Scottish band barreled through the new year, redeveloping their sound as adroitly as Weller and company ever did, and drawing from many of the same archetypes as well -- a virtue proven by their second single, a sterling cover of the Small Faces' "Watcha Gonna Do About It." Punk in a parka had never sounded so fresh. By the time of their self-titled debut album, however, the Jolt were already consigned to dwell in the Jam's lengthening shadow, a fate that the band themselves seemed to encourage. The best tracks on the album were those that could have sprung from Weller's pen -- and that is precisely where they did get "See Saw," the finest song among the eight bonus tracks appended to the Captain Oi! reissue. The B-side to Jolt's final single, "Maybe Tonight," the song was written for the band by the Jam man himself. But there is so much more to Jolt than an adrenalin rush of Jam-isms. Noisy, exuberant, eminently danceable and absolutely exhilarating, Jolt is the sound of mod at its most potently creative, a record that could have been made in 1965, but was certainly remixed in 1978, to take into account all that had happened since then. Even more importantly, the passing years have chipped none of that original excitement away, and Jolt remains just that...a welcome, thrilling jolt. Allmusic
"The Jolt formed in the Glasgow area of Scotland September 1976 while guitarist/songwriter Robbie Collins and bassist Jim Doaks were working as lowly clerks in the Civil Service and Ian Sheddon was a journalist writing the pop page for his local newspaper.
Apart from The Self Abusers and The the Zones there were few Glasgow punk bands not helped by an unofficial ban on punk in Glasgow. Originally playing 60's based covers the band influenced by the new punk spirit quickly got up to speed with tunes like Decoyed and Mr Radio Man and built up a following in Jim and Robbie's home town of Wishaw playing the Crown Hotel.
As a lot of Scottish bands found there was only so far you could go in their native land and the decision was taken to move to London. In one sense the gamble paid off. They played the Marquee, Nashville and supported bands like The Jam, Stranglers and Generation X. In Sounds 13.8.77 it reported the bands signing to Polydor which they did for £90,000 and a four year deal. In another way it was the start of their troubles.
Having left Scotland they were accused of selling out and got the cold shoulder from 'the scene' and the press.
Worse than that the punk scene they came from was now over a year old and there were hundreds of bands in London. Ironically punk was taking a different direction that would have suited the Jolt. Punk had turned to New Wave to power pop and The Jolt went back to their roots (just like The Cortinas) and began to change image and produce commercial pop with a punk punch.
Ten months on from forming the band released the Faces 'What'cha Gonna Do About It?' and overhaul their image into a sixties mod suited look.
Around September 1978 the band expanded into a four piece with keyboards. In June 1979 they released a final single before splitting up ironically just missing the mod revival that in the end they seemed to becoming so suited to.
Another single and an album were released to some critical acclaim along with favourable live reviews and interviews but not translated into sales. At the same time other events overshadowed the band that took the spotlight off their music. The Jolt were signed to Polydor, home to another three piece with a monosyllabic name beginning with 'J' and a penchant for suits. We mean of course The Jam who The Jolt often toured with and were great pals with. Inevitable comparisons were made to the detriment of the band.Whereas they were conceived as a tribute and for originality, I think in the end the suits helped kill the band and just create more Jam comparisons." www.punk77.co.uk
